COP 1332  INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL BASIC

Textbook:               Programming in Visual Basic, by Bradley, McGraw-Hill Publishing

Other Supplies:      Four or more 3 ½” double-sided, high-density diskettes with external (stick-on) labels

Catalog Description:
                                An introduction to the standards and conventions of programming in a graphical
                                environment. Emphasis will be placed on gaining an understanding of proper design and
                                use of the graphical user interface (GUI) development tools available in Visual Basic.
                                Similarities to and differences from traditional programming languages will be explored.

Course Objective:
   
                             The student should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the microcomputer
                                by demonstrating skills using hardware and software.

Method of Instruction:
   
                             Lectures and interactive participation by the student in the resolution of problems and
                                exercises.

Grading:                 4 exams, including the final exam                 40%
                                3 hands-on project exams      (HOPE)        40%
                                Graded homework assignments                   10%
                                PowerPoint presentation                              10%

                                A=90 – 100%                          (702 – 750 Points)
                                B=80 – 89%                            (642 – 701 Points)
                                C=70 – 79%                            (559 – 641 Points)
                                D=60 – 69%                            (484 – 558 Points)
                                F=0 – 59%                               (0 –483 Points)

Policy on Make-up Exams:
                                There will be no make-up exams.  If you miss one exam for a valid reason, the final exam
                                will be substituted.  If subsequent exams are missed, a grade of “0” will be assigned.

Course Requirements:
                                1        Homework assignments are due at the beginning of the class.  Late homework will
                                        not be accepted.  Each student is expected to do his/her own work.  Helping one
                                        another is allowed, but direct copying of assignments is cheating.  Every student is
                                        expected to enter his or her own individual keystrokes.

                                2.         It is imperative that if a student is absent from class all work be made up before
                                        returning to the class.  It is the student’s responsibility to get class assignments from
                                        a fellow student or the instructor for unattended classes.

College Attendance Policy:
   
                             Roll will be taken each class period. Students who are absent from class more than one
                                eighth of a course without the instructor
=s permission shall be withdrawn. Please consult
                                with class instructors for specific class attendance and grading policies.

For Help:
                                Your instructor is here to help you.  If you are having difficulty with the class
                                assignments, please contact your instructor during office hours.  The instructor will post
                                office hours shortly after the beginning of the semester.


                                Computers are available for student use in rooms BS 103, BS 105, BS 106, and BS
                                204.  There is no charge for the use of these rooms.  Open lab schedules will be posted
                                on each room door.

                                In addition, Kerry Merritt, the Business Division Lab Assistant, is here to assist all
                                students enrolled in computer courses.  His office is located in room BS 103B. His
