CGS 1519 Homework Assignments

Each and every printed or written assignment this term must include a cover sheet to include the information below. The cover sheet may be typed, computer generated, or clearly hand written. The grade for each assignment without this cover sheet will be reduced by 1 of 10 points.

The cover sheet will contain the following: 

Your Name
Homework Assignment
The Unit & Application Numbers 
The Due Date 
The Date Submitted to Your Instructor

An example of the cover sheet for Unit 1's assignments will be:

Be sure to follow the homework assignment directions carefully and completely unless directed otherwise below. 

Homework assignments will be graded and returned in a timely fashion.

Unit 1, Lessons 1-4

Complete the tutorial and practice exercises for lessons 1-4.

Complete the following exercises to turn in for homework: Unit 1 Application 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, beginning on page 152.

When completing 1-1:
Step 9--Use the Currency Style button on the Formatting Toolbar.

When completing 1-2:
The standard custom footer throughout the textbook requires your name at the left, the file name at the center, and the date at the right. Begin using the standard custom footer when directed to in this lesson.

When completing 1-3:
Step 4--Make this correction to sentence #2: Use the fill handle to add Weeks 2, 3, and 4 in the range C3:E3.

Unit 2, Lessons 5-7

Complete the tutorial and practice exercises for lessons 5-7.

Complete the following exercises to turn in for homework: Unit 2 Applications 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, beginning on page 260.

When completing 2-1:
Add this step after step #8: Display the formulas and print in landscape orientation with gridlines and row/column headings.

When completing 2-2:
Add this step after step #13: Display the formulas and print in landscape orientation with gridlines and row/column headings. Fit the printout to 1 page after you have adjusted column widths as tight as possible.

When completing 2-3:
Add this step after step #5: Display the formulas and print in landscape orientation with gridlines and row/column headings.

Unit 3, Lessons 8-10

Complete the tutorial and practice exercises for lessons 8-10. When completing 8-27, add a step following 8d: Change the X-axis title to read "May 1 through May 16."

Complete the following exercises to turn in for homework: Unit 3 Applications 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, beginning on page 381.

When completing 3-1:
Add to step #6--change the marker to a 10 pt. diamond.

When completing 3-2:
Add this step after step #10: Display the formulas and print in landscape orientation. Squeeze columns A:D as narrow as possible, but be certain all formulas are visible. Fit to 1 page.

When completing 3-3:
Change step #8 to read as follows: Print the worksheet with your standard footer, printing the comment at the end.

Unit 4, Lessons 11-13

Complete the tutorial and practice exercises for lessons 11-13.

Complete the following exercises to turn in for homework: Unit 4 Applications 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, and the additional exercise (below), beginning on page 493.

When completing 4-1:
In step 5, you cannot copy the formula. Use must re-key each one, referencing the appropriate month. Add this step after step 12: Format cells B4:C7 with 2 decimal places.

Add the following step after step 19:
Display the cell formulas in the Actual and Estimated worksheets. Adjust column widths so all formulas are fully readable. Paste the list of named ranges beginning at cell A10 of the Estimated worksheet. Adjust the width of column A, if necessary. Print both worksheets in landscape orientation with gridlines and column/row headings. The Actual worksheet will not fit on one page.

When completing 4-3:
Add this step after printing in step 10 and before closing the workbook: Print the formulas with gridlines and row/column headings.

Additional Homework Assignment for Unit 4:

This exercise will give practice in naming ranges and constants and using the Lookup functions.

Open the file named Unit 4 Additional Homework Exercise.xls. This file is NOT on the CD. It has, however, been added to the files at R:\CGS1519\Student Files. Click here to download it directly from this web page.

Name the table in the ProductList worksheet. You will use this table later in a VLOOKUP formula.

At cell B5 of the SalesRecord worksheet, use the VLOOKUP function to display the correct Product that corresponds to the Product # in Column A. Copy the formula down for the remaining Products.

At cell C5 of the SalesRecord worksheet, use the VLOOKUP function to display the correct Price that corresponds to the Product # in Column A. Copy the formula down for the remaining products.

Name a constant TaxRate that equals 6.5%.

At cell D5 of the SalesRecord worksheet, compute the Tax (Price * TaxRate). Copy the formula down for the remaining products.

At cell E5, compute the Total (Price + Tax). Copy the formula down for the remaining products.

Make the PersonnelList worksheet the active worksheet.

Name the table in the PersonnelList worksheet. You will use this table later in a HLOOKUP formula.

Make the Payroll worksheet the active worksheet.

At cell B5, use the HLOOKUP function to display the correct Employee name. Copy the formula down for the remaining employees.

At cell D5, compute the Gross Pay. You will need to use the HLOOKUP function to multiply the Hours Worked at C5 by the correct Employee’s Hourly Rate. Copy the formula down for the remaining employees. Format the Gross Pay to 2 decimals places.

Add the standard footer to the SalesRecord and Payroll worksheets. Center both worksheets horizontally.

Save the file with [your inititals]Unit 4 Additional Exercise.xls.

Print both worksheets.

Display the formulas and print both the SalesRecord and Payroll worksheets in landscape orientation. Display column headings and gridlines. Be certain all formulas are fully visible on both sheets. Each worksheet should fit on 1 page. You can chop off Column A in both worksheets.

Close the file without saving.

Unit 5, Lessons 14-16; Additional Financial/Date Lesson

Complete the tutorial and practice exercises for lessons 14-16 (lesson 17 will not be covered) and the tutorial for the Financial/Date lesson (handed out in class). The files for the handed out lesson are not on the CD. They have been added to drive R:. Click here to download them directly from this web site.

When completing 14-18:
The Balance template file is on the CD and on drive R:

When completing 16-23:
Reverse the order of steps 5 and 6 to save before you print.

Complete the following exercises to turn in for homework: Unit 5 Applications 5-1, 5-2, and 5-3, beginning on page 615, as well as Exercises 12-22 and 12-23 from the Financial/Date lesson (handed out in class).

When completing 5-1:
Delete column P.
When printing in step 10, use Fit to 1 page.

When completing 12-23:
Skip step 11.

Unit 6, Lessons 18-20

Complete the tutorial and practice exercises for lessons 18-20.

There are 2 files that are missing from the CD for lesson 18. The have been added to the Student Files folder on the network drive R:.

To download the files from here, Right-click, Save Target As to download ThirdQtr.htm. Right-click, Save Target As to download NewEmployees.txt.

In Exercise 18-5, page 625, step 6, also check the Link to file checkbox to link the Word file into Excel.

Skip Exercise 18-11, pages 633-634. The Web Query feature in this exercise no longer works. The author/editors have been notified and suggested that this portion of lesson 18 be omitted.

Complete the following exercises to turn in for homework: Unit 6 Applications 6-1, 6-2, and 6-3, beginning on page 740.
